Non-disconnect
When the drive wheels use a non-independent suspension, a non-disconnect drive axle should be selected. A non-disconnect drive axle, also known as an integral drive axle, has its half-shaft sleeves and main reducer casing rigidly connected to the axle casing as a single integral beam. Therefore, the half-shafts on both sides and the drive wheels swing together, and are connected to the chassis through elastic components. It consists of a drive axle housing, main reducer, differential, and half-shafts.
Disconnect
A drive axle using an independent suspension, where the main reducer casing is fixed to the chassis, and the half-shafts and drive wheels on both sides can have relative movement to the vehicle body in the transverse plane, is called a disconnect drive axle.
In order to cooperate with the independent suspension, the main reducer casing is fixed to the chassis (or body), the drive axle casing is segmented and connected by hinges, or there are no other parts of the drive axle casing besides the main reducer casing. In order to adapt to the independent up and down movement of the drive wheels, universal joints connect the sections of the half-shafts between the differential and the wheels.
